Retirement Tribute to OJA Boardchairperson, Eric Apelgren

After an extraordinary 25-year journey, Eric Apelgren retires as the Head of International and Governance Relations at eThekwini Municipality, leaving behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped Durban’s global standing and community spirit.

Operation Jumpstart Association is proud to have been associated with Eric Apelgren for many years, At present he is the Chair of the Board.

“I was blessed to have Eric as my chairman when I took over the job as Director of OJa. Together with the Board he provides insight and experience. He is a hands-on Boord member. At Operation Jumpstart Association we pay honour our chairperson and pay tribute to Eric for his outstanding work for the city. We know that he still has plenty to do so we wish him well and hope that he enjoys the next part of his life journey.” says OJA Director, Sayinile Zungu.

Eric’s tenure began at a pivotal moment for Durban, as he was tasked with establishing and developing the Department of International Relations and Governance in 2000. Under his stewardship, the city’s international profile soared. When he started, Durban had just six sister cities; today, that number stands at 23, with 34 diplomatic missions now calling the city home

His efforts have not only attracted significant foreign investment but have also fostered knowledge exchange, best practices, and educational opportunities for local students through international partnerships

Champion of Community and Unity

Beyond international relations, Eric’s commitment to fostering unity within Durban is evident in his management of the Halala Celebrate Durban initiative. Through approximately 40 annual events, he brought together communities and the private sector, creating platforms for celebration and togetherness while maximizing resources

These events have become a cornerstone of Durban’s civic life, reinforcing a sense of belonging and pride among residents.

Mentor, Innovator, and Public Servant

Eric’s approach was always rooted in his background as a community worker, a foundation that gave him the passion and resilience to serve for a quarter of a century

. He was instrumental in sending municipal staff abroad to learn from global best practices, ensuring that eThekwini Municipality remained a leader in governance and innovation. His colleagues and partners have come to know him as “eThekwini Municipality’s Mkhongi”—a trusted advisor and the longest-serving Head in the city’s administration
