International Women’s Day & Human Rights Day Message

Sayinile Zungu. Director, Operation Jumpstart Association.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day alongside Human Rights Day this March, we are reminded of the enduring strength, courage, and leadership of women across South Africa—past and present.

This year, we pay special tribute to the women who continue to lead from the front. At Operation Jumpstart Association, we are proud that 98% of the organisations housed within our properties are women-led. These women are not only managing institutions; they are shaping communities, driving social change, and responding daily to some of the most urgent challenges facing our society.

We also honour the legacy of the women of 1956, whose bravery during the historic march to the Union Buildings laid the foundation for the rights we uphold today. As we reflect, we recognise and celebrate the last surviving stalwart of that movement, Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. Her life stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to justice. At the same time, we pay tribute to the many women stalwarts who have since passed on, but whose contributions continue to shape our democracy and the recognition of women’s roles in society.

This moment calls on us to reaffirm our responsibility to protect and uplift the most vulnerable among us, particularly women and children. Across the communities we serve, women-led organisations are at the forefront of providing care, shelter, healthcare, and support to children at risk, as well as to women facing poverty, illness, and violence.
Health remains a critical focus. From tackling diseases such as TB to ensuring access to basic healthcare services, these organisations are saving lives and restoring dignity. At the same time, they are creating safe spaces where children can grow, learn, and thrive, and where women can find protection, empowerment, and hope.

As we mark Human Rights Day, we are reminded that the rights to health, safety, and dignity are not privileges; they are fundamental human rights. It is through the leadership of women that these rights are being realised every day at the grassroots level.

We salute all women who lead, serve, and uplift others—often against great odds. Your work does not go unnoticed. Your impact is immeasurable.

Let us continue to support, invest in, and stand alongside women-led initiatives, ensuring that their work is sustained and strengthened for generations to come.

Happy International Women’s Day and Human Rights Day.
