Freedom Day Message for KwaZulu-Natal from Ms Sayinile Zungu, Director of Operation Jumpstart Association

Ms Sayinile Zungu, Director of Operation Jumpstart Association

As we gather to celebrate Freedom Day in the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal, we are reminded of the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering hope that brought us to this moment.

This day is not just a commemoration of our first democratic elections in 1994, but a tribute to generations of heroes—fearless warriors, determined workers, brave students, and powerful women and men—who believed in a future where all South Africans could live in dignity and equality.

Their sacrifices were not in vain. Today, as we walk in the footsteps of giants like John Langalibalele Dube, Albertina Sizulu, Florence Mkhize, Victoria and Griffiths Mxenge, and countless others, we must remember that the true meaning of freedom is not only to cast off our own chains, but to live in a way that uplifts and empowers others.

Our Constitution, born from the dreams of our people, calls on us to build a society where every person— regardless of race, class, or creed—can thrive. Freedom Day is a call to unity. It is a day for all of us— young and old, rich and poor, rural and urban—to come together in the spirit of ubuntu, knowing that our destinies are intertwined.

The journey to a just and equal society is not yet complete. We still face challenges of poverty, inequality, and injustice, but the resilience and hope that carried us through the darkest days of our history continue to light our path forward.

  • Let us honour the memory of our forebears.
  • Let us recommit ourselves to the values of empathy, compassion, and solidarity.
  • Let us listen to the voices of the youth, the so-called “born frees,” who remind us to embrace who we are and to cherish the progress we have made.
  • Let us work together to ensure that the fruits of freedom are shared by all, and that no one is left behind.

On this Freedom Day 2025, let us celebrate not just how far we have come, but the limitless possibilities that lie ahead when we stand together.

May the spirit of KwaZulu-Natal – rich in history, culture, and hope -inspire us to build a future worthy of our past and our dreams.

Happy Freedom Day!

May we continue to walk forward, working to improve the lives of vulnerable communities in KwaZulu-Natal through the provision of infrastructural support.
