As we celebrate Heritage Day this year, we honour the rich history, diverse cultures, languages, traditions and values that make South Africa unique.
Remember, our heritage is not only found in the past—it lives through the way we care for one another, share our stories, respect our differences and work together to build stronger communities. It is reflected in our families, our neighbourhoods, our resilience and our shared hope for a better future.
We cannot speak of strong communities while gender-based violence and femicide continue to threaten the safety and dignity of women and children. It takes many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional and economic abuse, and is often worsened by silence, fear and limited access to support services.
The fight against GBV requires all of us — families, communities, organisations, institutions and government — to speak up, take responsibility and act.
This year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Living Heritage: Strengthening the Ties That Bind Us,” reminds us that our greatest strength lies in our ability to stand together.
Let us use our heritage to inspire ubuntu, unity, dignity, respect and action. Let us build communities where people are safe, empowered and able to participate in shaping their own future.
Addressing this crisis requires more than condemnation: it calls for stronger accountability, effective protection for survivors, public education, early intervention and a collective commitment from families, communities, institutions and government to challenge harmful attitudes and build a society founded on safety, dignity and respect.
